Wolverhampton Civic Hall Shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2024

Wolverhampton Civic Hall has achieved a significant milestone by being shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit 2024 Awards under the prestigious Conservation and Historic (£5 million and over) category. This nomination acknowledges the extensive and challenging refurbishment undertaken by SPACE&PLACE (S&P) and Atkins Realis who took over the project after the original contractor, the Shayler Group, went into administration in 2019.

A Revival of a Historic Venue

Originally constructed in 1938, Wolverhampton Civic Hall has long been a central venue for entertainment and culture in the region, hosting legendary performances from artists like David Bowie, Oasis, and The Jam. However, the refurbishment project was no small feat. After inheriting a partially stripped-out building riddled with asbestos and a design deemed unbuildable, S&P started from scratch, revisiting the project from RIBA Stage 0.

Despite the setbacks, including budget constraints, the impact of COVID-19, complex structural challenges, and a new client, AEG, joining towards the end of the project, the result has been a resounding success. The Civic Hall is now thriving, with visitor numbers exceeding expectations, a booming local nightlife and a rich array of events firmly placing it back on the UK music calendar.

A Landmark in Conservation

The conservation and refurbishment of Wolverhampton Civic Hall were guided by a vision to maintain its historic integrity while modernising the facilities to meet contemporary standards. The project enhanced the audience experience by increasing capacity, food and beverage offers and improving accessibility, ensuring the venue could accommodate a broader range of acts and events.

The building now boasts new features, including an upper balcony in the main Civic Hall with 322 seats, an accessible VIP entrance to the Wulfrun Hall, and new bar and catering facilities that generate additional revenue streams. The Wulfrun Hall itself now has a seating balcony with a bar, providing a versatile space that significantly boosts the venue’s functionality.

Technical Innovation and Design Excellence

The design team demonstrated remarkable innovation in the structural work required for the Civic Hall’s refurbishment. A 150-ton steel framework was erected within the original auditorium to create the new upper-level terrace and gallery bar, all while preserving the building’s historic listed character. Extensive repairs were also made to the original steelwork, ensuring the building’s longevity while maintaining its unique aesthetic.

Materials played a crucial role in the project, with the design drawing inspiration from the Civic Hall’s blend of Neoclassical style and bold modernist massing. The introduction of new glass interventions adds a contemporary touch that complements the historic fabric of the building, creating a dynamic and visually engaging facade.

Looking Ahead

The nomination for the AJ Retrofit Awards is a testament to the dedication and expertise of everyone involved in the project. The live judging for the category will take place at AJ Retrofit Live on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, with the winner announced later that evening at The Brewery in London.

Wolverhampton Civic Hall’s successful refurbishment not only revitalises a cherished landmark but also sets a benchmark for how historic venues can be adapted for modern use while preserving their heritage. The Civic Hall is now better equipped than ever to host a diverse range of cultural events, ensuring its place as a key venue in the UK’s entertainment landscape for years to come.
