Whittingham Sports & Social Club

Elevating Community Life: The Modern Sports & Social Club at Preston’s Former Whittingham Hospital Site.

Alongside Tibbalds and Campbell Reith, SPACE&PLACE (S&P) designed a new Sports & Social Club for Homes England on the former Whittingham Hospital site in Preston. The project focused on meeting community needs and enhancing existing facilities.

The single-storey clubhouse, with a steward’s flat on the first floor, is centrally located to serve both sports and social activities, ensuring optimal experiences for players and spectators. This central positioning also improves site surveillance.

The site features a senior football pitch (100 x 64 meters) with ball-stop nets and a fenced sports storage area. A multi-use games area (MUGA) and a tennis court, both with weather-resistant surfaces, offer all-weather play. An events, caravan, and camping area is located near the main entrance. The existing lit bowling green has been preserved and refurbished, with the addition of new team shelters and storage facilities.

The car park includes 81 spaces, with 14 additional spaces near the MUGA/tennis court. Accessible parking and cycle spaces are close to the clubhouse entrance. The landscape scheme features footpaths, a biodiversity area, perimeter planting, and a potential playground near the clubhouse.

The clubhouse entrance has been designed to be welcoming, featuring a glazed lobby that offers a spacious and inviting area. An office at the entry supports administrative tasks and surveillance, while a foyer directs users to key areas and displays a historic mosaic from the former hospital site. Separate male, female, and accessible toilets are provided.

The events room, accommodating 150 people, includes a demountable stage, a dance floor, and access to a terrace. The facility also features a backstage room, a club lounge, and dual bar areas for versatile event and casual use. The lounge connects to games and terrace areas, while a well-positioned cellar supports efficient bar operations. A kitchen and cold store are included to support daily food preparation and to cater for large events.

Results

The new Sports & Social Club is designed to significantly enhance community facilities by providing a dynamic and engaging space for both sports and social activities. Emphasizing natural and sustainable materials, the design creates a bright and open atmosphere that enhances the overall experience. The clubhouse is envisioned as a vibrant and welcoming hub, perfect for local gatherings, events, and daily use, thereby fostering a strong sense of community and connection.
