Elevating Community Life: The Modern Sports & Social Club at Preston’s Former Whittingham Hospital Site.

SPACE&PLACE (S&P) collaborated with Tibbalds and Campbell Reith to design a modern Sports & Social Club. This club is located on the former Whittingham Hospital site. The project prioritises community needs and enhances existing facilities.

Centralised Clubhouse Design

The new single-storey clubhouse includes a steward’s flat on the first floor. This design facilitates both sports and social activities. This central location not only optimises the experience for players and spectators but also enhances site surveillance. As a result, the community can enjoy a safer and more engaging environment.

Comprehensive Sports Facilities

The site includes a senior football pitch measuring 100 x 64m. It features ball-stop nets and a fenced sports storage area. Additionally, a multi-use games area (MUGA) and a tennis court, both equipped with weather-resistant surfaces, ensure year-round play. The project also includes an events, caravan, and camping area conveniently located near the main entrance. Importantly, the existing lit bowling green has undergone preservation and refurbishment, complemented by new team shelters and storage facilities.

Accessible Parking and Landscaped Areas

The clubhouse offers ample parking with 81 spaces in the main car park and 14 additional spaces near the MUGA and tennis court. Furthermore, accessible parking and cycle spaces are conveniently located close to the clubhouse entrance. The landscape scheme enriches the site with footpaths, a biodiversity area, perimeter planting, and a potential playground, promoting outdoor enjoyment and interaction.

Welcoming Clubhouse Entrance

The clubhouse entrance features a glazed lobby that creates a spacious and inviting atmosphere. An office at the entry assists with administrative tasks and enhances surveillance, while a foyer guides visitors to key areas. A historic mosaic from the former hospital site adds a unique touch. The facility includes separate male, female, and accessible toilets for user convenience.

Versatile Event Space

The events room can accommodate up to 150 people and includes a demountable stage, a dance floor, and access to a terrace. The design incorporates a backstage room, a club lounge, and dual bar areas, allowing for a variety of events and casual gatherings. The lounge connects seamlessly to games and terrace areas, while a strategically positioned cellar supports efficient bar operations. A kitchen and cold store facilitate daily food preparation and catering for large events.

Results and Community Impact

Ultimately, the new Sports & Social Club aims to significantly enhance community facilities by providing a dynamic and engaging space for both sports and social activities. The design emphasises natural and sustainable materials, creating a bright and open atmosphere that enriches the overall experience. Envisioned as a vibrant and welcoming hub, the clubhouse is perfect for local gatherings, events, and daily use, fostering a strong sense of community and connection among residents.
