University of Cambridge Cricket School
January 2004
SPACE & PLACE were commissioned to carry out the full architectural and interior design services for the indoor and outdoor cricket facilities at Fenner’s, at the University of Cambridge.
In 1999, the England and Wales Cricket Board awarded Fenner’s the status of a University Centre of Excellence, following a competition to select six such centres throughout the UK. This status was essential to retain first class cricket at Fenner’s. In response, the University constructed a new indoor Cricket School as a training facility for the regional cricketing community.
The Cricket School offers 640m2 of useable space and this allows for three practise lanes divided by netting. The roof and walls have been designed to provide high levels of natural light without glare. Other exposed elevations are clad with American white oak. Internally, natural light is supplemented by artificial lighting to maintain appropriately high levels. The floor is of special construction for cricket.
Design and build, this was a 12 month contract.
