Transforming Talacre Sports Centre to be Built for the Future and Accessible for All

In 2023, SPACE & PLACE were asked to transform Talacre Sports Centre in Camden, with a mission to embrace modernisation, sustainability and accessibility. The original Sports Centre was important to the local community, and we focused on enhancing the existing building in line with local needs. This was achieved by holding many consultation meetings with the public, listening to the community’s requests and concerns to ensure the building allowed for everyone to enjoy its enhanced offers.

The Centre has since reopened to become Camden’s hub for sport and fitness learning. Alongside a new purpose-built gymnasium, the building can accommodate more users, helping meet the large demand for use of the Centre among local residents. The development also included specialist facilities to support younger gymnasts, as well as improvements that made the centre more accessible to a wide range of users.

New additions also included a new large studio, a much needed extension of the gymnasium, a new soft play, a party room and a multi-use room. Talacre now also has a new entrance which links the public to the Centre with a new café and facilities bringing the community together.

Sustainability was also a key component of the redevelopment, having been delivered in line with the Council’s carbon reduction programme, meaning the Centre’s carbon emissions are now near net-zero. The implementation of cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly practices reduces the carbon footprint, aligning with Camden Council’s commitment to sustainability. Energy-efficient systems, renewable energy sources and eco-conscious materials ensure a greener operation, setting a precedent for sustainable development within the community. Our lead architect for the project, Kunal Tailor, received an award “in recognition of exceptional vision and dedication in exceeding expectations throughout the transformation of the sports centre”.

Results and Community Impact

After opening in June 2026, the project delivered both new and upgraded facilities, increased the availability for learning, and incorporated specialist equipment that makes activities more inclusive and accessible for all while staying in line with Camden’s carbon reduction programme, allowing the centre to operate at near net-zero.

Talacre Sports Centre is a great example of how investment in community infrastructure can create lasting social, health, and environmental benefits and bring residents together.
