The Peak Sports Village

January 2009

SPACE & PLACE gathered inspiration from both the industrial aesthetic of the nearby retail showrooms and the undulating Ochils which overlook the Forth Valley. This building formed the focus for the new sports village at Stirling, enhancing the existing Forthbank football stadium, home to Stirling Albion, and the County Cricket Ground, all located on the edge of the town.

The centre has a combined ’wet & dry’ facility, offering swimming for the community through a 6-lane, 25m competition pool, learner pool complete with moveable floor and kid’s pools, all of which complement the existing 50m pool at Stirling University.

These pool facilities are combined with a 9-court multi-sports hall, 100 station fitness gym and 3 studios, to offer the widest possible range of sports to the community.

The development offered an unusual twist, in response to specific local sports demand, through the inclusion of an ice rink which can accommodate 6 curling rinks. The rink offers curling to the extensive network of local clubs with the ability to offer training to national and elite curlers.

The final element of the development was the inclusion of all-weather external sports pitches. Again in response to local demand 6-a-side pitches are provided, which enhance the provision of a full-size synthetic turf soccer pitch and water based hockey pitch. All the facilities are provided with flood lighting along with high quality changing within the Sports Centre.

The development was undertaken as a phased Contract with the all-weather pitches being completed in autumn 2007 and the whole development opened to the public in early 2009.
