St Sidwell’s Point

March 2022

St Sidwell’s Point (SSP) is celebrated as the world’s first certified Passivhaus Leisure Centre and Pools, showcasing an innovative ‘green’ and healthy design. This groundbreaking project highlights our commitment to creating spaces that promote environmental awareness and foster community cohesion. As one of only three Passivhaus Leisure Centres globally, SSP is expected to set a new standard for future leisure centres, whether certified Passivhaus or not. Impressively sustainable, SSP is the most energy-efficient leisure centre in the UK, designed to last eighty years while adapting to future climate changes. By using seventy percent less energy than conventional centres, it also shortens the payback period amidst rising energy costs. Exeter has proudly stated that SSP brings the city closer to its target of net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

The dynamic, contemporary design and high-quality interior spaces provide a landmark for the local community to take pride in and a destination they will want to visit. Situated in the heart of the city, next to major retail areas and the bus station, SSP sends a clear message that its extensive sports, leisure, and spa facilities are open to all residents, while also attracting tourists. As a healthy building, the design maximizes natural daylight in its urban setting and prioritizes clean air, CO2 monitoring, and reductions in indoor toxins, following the Institute of Building Biology (IBN) recommendations.

This modern centre aims to inspire the city to discover new ways to stay active within a healthy environment that supports their fitness journey, strengthens the local community, and boosts the economy.

St Sidwell’s Point has set a new benchmark for environmental and sustainability standards as one of the world’s most significant Passivhaus projects. It is the first public swimming pool in the UK to fully meet Passivhaus standards, as certified by the Passive House Institute (PHI). The centre supports an active and sustainable city centre by providing a low-energy, climate-ready, and healthy environment. As a gateway building with high-quality design on a prominent city route, it reflects civic pride and serves as a catalyst for urban regeneration, attracting nearly a million visits annually to the former bus station site.

The centre’s strategic location in the heart of Exeter, near the central bus station and within walking distance of the railway station, makes it highly accessible. Its inclusive design welcomes people from all walks of life, encouraging public exploration and participation. Recognized with multiple awards, including the RICS Environmental Impact Award and the CIOB Public Building of the Year, SSP stands as a symbol of innovation and sustainability. It aims to inspire people to engage in healthy activities, whether relaxing, swimming, or trying new sports, while reinforcing Exeter’s commitment to a sustainable and vibrant urban future.
