South Lakes, Craigavon, NI

December 2020

We built the South Lakes Leisure Centre next to the new civic centre in Craigavon, Northern Ireland. Central to the design is a vibrant hub space, which forms the core of the leisure centre. This space connects seamlessly with the adjacent lake and park, offering year-round activities.

Designed to instil civic pride, the centre addresses the need for an urban focal point in the town. Historically, many new towns, including Craigavon, lacked such a civic centrepiece. The design team from SPACE&PLACE (S&P) collaborated closely with the architectural design review panel of Northern Ireland. This partnership ensured the master planning phase was effectively executed, enhancing the potential for a thriving town centre.

The South Lakes Leisure Centre features a 50m training pool, versatile for both leisure and teaching purposes. Additional facilities include multiple squash courts, an 8-court sports hall, and a 200-station fitness gym. The centre also boasts various studios, activity rooms, a comprehensive health suite, and a dedicated water sports centre.
