Queens University’s PEC

Crafting a premier hub for Physical Education and Wellness.
SPACE & PLACE were invited to develop a feasibility study for Queens University’s PEC (Physical Education Centre). Currently, Queens University’s PEC is undergoing an exciting transformation. Specifically, the feasibility study explores the potential for creating a cutting-edge facility that combines high-performance sports, fitness, and wellness services with versatile “Varsity” spaces. These spaces, in particular, will foster informal student gatherings and collaboration in a relaxed setting.
The site, located near Queen’s University, the Botanic Gardens, and the River Laggan, includes the original PEC and recent additions such as the Rotunda and 3G pitches. Moreover, serving as a major hub, the site benefits from a large car and coach park accessible from Stranmillis Embankment Road. The design, therefore, aims to enhance green connections between the university and surrounding parks, integrating a “promenade” within the building that links the café area to the main entrance. This pathway will, consequently, become the building’s heart, connecting public spaces with sports facilities and fostering a vibrant “Varsity” atmosphere. Additionally, outdoor facilities will be situated to connect seamlessly with the Botanic Gardens, while parking remains conveniently located to the south. Furthermore, the design leverages the site’s sloping terrain, with the café entrance aligned with the existing PEC entrance to minimize excavation.
Overall, the facility is designed to enhance the health and well-being of students, staff, and the local community.
