Parklands Leisure Centre
January 2017
SPACE & PLACE was appointed by Sport Leisure Management to support them in the successful DBOM procurement process for Parklands Leisure Centre.
The proposal consisted of the remodelling/refurbishment of the existing facility with the addition of a new six-lane 25 metre swimming pool and associated plant facilities.
The swimming pool has been located to the front of the existing facility to demonstrate its’ high profile and quality. The pool use will include recreational and fitness swimming as well as a venue for clubs and schools. The wet change facilities have been located in a remodelled area of the existing building where the facilities had become redundant.
To further generate a strong new identity to the facility an entrance with a new larger, naturally lit reception area has been created. The fitness suite capacity has doubled with an existing dance studio and further redundant areas have been combined to provide a large open fitness facility. The original fitness suite has been converted into two new studio spaces, of which one will be used predominantly for spin classes which will overlook the central courtyard.
The existing function suites have also been upgraded to be multi-purpose, allowing functions still to be carried out, but also providing large studio spaces for various sports activities. All the existing changing and toilet facilities on the site have also been upgraded.
Extensive external works have also been carried out in order to improve the approach to the leisure centre as well as car park and landscape improvements.
Phase 1 of the project was successfully completed in November 2014 with Phase 2 completed December 2015 at a cost of £3.5m.
