Northcroft Lido

August 2023

The iconic Northcroft Lido has been completely transformed, creating an enhanced experience for visitors of all ages. Additionally, the outdoor swimming season has now been extended to six months, from April to September, offering more opportunities to enjoy the facility.

Originally dating back to 1870, the Northcroft Lido was rebuilt in the 1930s, and a new concrete tank was added in the 1970s. However, for years, poor ground conditions and a fluctuating water table plagued the lido. The work completed in the 1970s did not resolve these issues and as a result, West Berkshire Council initiated further improvements to address the ongoing structural problems and the leaking tank. Extensive soil stabilisation and mini piles have now been introduced below the tank and the deep end has been removed to enhance structural integrity, with a new PVC laminated lining added.

Along with securing the lido tank’s long-term structural stability, exciting new facilities were introduced to boost the lido’s appeal. A children’s splash zone, multi-slide, and flume have been added, making the lido even more family friendly. New pool surrounds, decking, sun terraces, and landscaping have also been installed to create a more inviting environment. Moreover, new external changing facilities and a covered café area have provided a relaxing space for visitors to enjoy.

The nearly 50-year-old filtration system has been completely replaced to enhance water quality, as well as modern energy-efficient pumps are being used to meet the increased demand from the new water features, ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable experience for all.
