National Aquatic Centre, Dublin
March 2003
SPACE & PLACE was selected to work alongside Ascon Rohcon and Waterworld to design, build and operate the National Aquatic Centre for Ireland after an open competition.
The design was submitted for planning 2 days after selection, work commenced on site 3 months later and the project was completed within 2 years enabling it to be a central part of the Special Olympics held in 2003. The building was opened by the Irish Prime Minister and has been used as an example of how the Irish construction industry can respond to a challenging brief and a short construction programme to deliver an iconic building.
The brief called for a full Olympic standard pool which meets all FINA standards with 3,000 seats, a diving pool to international standard and a leisure pool. S&P’s response was a building which was divided into 2 – a swim training area and a fun/family area. A gym, café and health suite are located between the 2 pool buildings, along with the Reception and administration offices.
The main access to spectator seating for events is from an open concourse on the first floor. This can be reached from both sides of the building by stairs and from a lift within the building.
