London Fields Lido, Hackney

October 2006

SPACE & PLACE was involved in bringing this 1932 Lido back to life, within London Fields Park, central Hackney.

The existing pool had been closed for some 18 years suffering from neglect, vandalism and the ravages of nature, to the extent that a tree had taken root in the pool tank. Although not listed, the pool is located in metropolitan open space and a conservation area, with the mix of refurbishment and new build undertaken responding to the parkland setting in a quiet respectful manner.

In order to bring the pool back to life a new concrete pool tank, with improved disabled access, was provided, retaining the 50m overall length to maximise the water area, whilst offering a unique 50m swimming experience. New water treatment and heating plant was provided to ensure water quality and temperature in response to user expectations. The external changing cubicles and toilets have been replaced and for the less hardy a new entrance block houses enclosed, heated, changing rooms and toilets. This new building also provides a secure reception and office facility for the pool operation.

The refurbishment was undertaken to re-establish the facility, reunite it with the existing park, revitalise the area and improve the lifestyle of the local community. The result is an improved and modernised pool which has retained the essential feel of the original lidos to offer the residents of Hackney the wonderful experience of swimming in the open air under the canopy of mature London Plains.
