London 2012 Olympics Legacy (Copper Box)

January 2013

SPACE & PLACE was appointed by London Borough of Lambeth and Sport England to review the design proposals for the leisure facility against the client’s requirements, design guidance and good practice. The review work started during the design stages and continued through the preparation of production information and during construction on site.

After handover of the project, S&P was employed by the operator to undertake further design work to allow additional fit-out to meet the operational requirements.

The Multi-use Arena was used for Handball and Goal Ball in the Olympics and Paralympics.

The legacy use has seen the building operated as a Health Club on a day to day basis; with a 12 court sports hall on the Olympic Field of Play and the inclusion of a new Gym. The Field of Play is also adapted to allow for International Sports Competition, including Basketball; end and centre stage locations are introduced to allow for boxing competitions and concert use. The seating is amended to allow a maximum of 7,000 spectators including seating on the Field of Play for concerts and boxing.
