Littlehampton ‘Wave’ Leisure Centre

October 2019

Littlehampton Wave, the new sports centre in Littlehampton, is the largest capital project by SPACE&PLACE (S&P) after eight years with Arun District Council. In this context, the project assessed leisure, tourism, and sports needs in this growing southern England area.

Situated next to Edwardian Mewsbrook Park, the centre features an 8-lane, 25-meter pool, a 17-meter learner pool, a 100-station gym, two studios, a community room, as well as a café for park and beach visitors. Notably, the two-story facility offers pool views from the park and stunning beach views from the gym and café.

Furthermore, the design demonstrates the Council’s commitment to regeneration through architecture, with a focus on emphasizing the beachfront location. SPACE&PLACE (S&P) developed a compact design that fits between buried pipework and is near the existing centre, thus ensuring uninterrupted service. By reusing existing infrastructure, like access roads and car parks, the project maximizes the site’s potential and budget.

Additionally, the slightly elevated design reduces the impact of the high-water table during construction and protects against potential flooding if the sea wall is breached. This elevation also improves sea views while increasing visibility along the seafront.
