SPACE & PLACE’s brief was to design an integrated health & fitness facility providing an affordable and inclusive environment, accessible to all members of the general public and more ‘exclusive’ facilities for the paying customer.
‘Lillie Road’ Pools are located on the edge of Normond Park in Fulham, on the site of a former swimming pool. The centre has been carefully designed to minimise the impact on the surrounding parkland and neighbouring buildings whilst enlivening this area of the park and providing a focal point for social events.
Externally, cedar clad panelling and doors have been introduced to break up the expanse of brickwork and provide a softer tactile finish. A high canopy accentuates the main entrance and a large expanse of glazing creates a positive connection between park and building, to draw in visitors and provide users with a panoramic view of the park.
The interior maximises the use of natural light within the building and in order to avoid obvious separation of public and private areas, visual design links have been used such as strong geometric forms within the structure and different colour schemes.
