Heworth Leisure Centre
June 2010
Gateshead Council SCAPE projects, as part of the ‘Building An Active Future’ programme were the biggest ever investment in leisure facilities in Gateshead. Through Gateshead SCAPE, SPACE & PLACE has delivered 6 projects, including Heworth Leisure Centre, with a combined value in excess of £30m.
Heworth was built to replace the existing Felling Leisure Centre and incorporates the following facilities:
- 25m 6 lane swimming pool
- 13 x 7m Teaching water
- Fun Water
- FlowRider Surfing unit
- Spectator seating
- Wet Change Village
- Fitness Suite
- Multi- Purpose Studio
The centre currently houses the first FlowRider surfing machine in the north of the UK, which was included to extend the community attraction the client brief requested.
The sweeping curve of the roof responds to the varying levels of the site and provides for a highly active façade from the main entrance and main Shibdon Road approach.
