Gateshead Leisure Centre

March 2010

Gateshead Council SCAPE projects, as part of the ’Building an Active Future programme’, were the biggest ever investment in leisure facilities in Gateshead.

A major part of this investment was to use SPACE & PLACE’s expertise to bring Gateshead Council’s swimming pools up to a contemporary, high level standard. Before the inception of these projects all of their pools were over 30 years old, with the pool at Gateshead Leisure Centre claiming to have the longest history having been built as the Shipcote Pool in 1941. Most of the other pools were built in the 1960s and 1970s.

The design of Gateshead Leisure Centre focused on the creation of major atrium circulation space within existing building, to introduce day-lighting and improved public amenity. New main entrance and reception facilities with new café. Extended fitness gym, with refurbished pools, wet and dry changing, and health suite. Significant DDA improvements throughout.

Through Gateshead SCAPE, S&P has delivered 6 projects, with a combined value in excess of £30m.

The projects were Blaydon Health and Wellness Centre, Gateshead International Stadium (new build & refurbishment), Gateshead Leisure Centre (refurbishment), Dunston Leisure Centre, Heworth Leisure Centre, and Birtley Leisure Centre.
