Freeport Kungsparksvägen , Sweden
July 2002
Freeport Kungsbacka is situated 25km South of Gothenburg and offers 17,700m2 of retail with complementary food offers and leisure facilities for children.
The brief from Freeport was to produce a design, which would be contemporary, yet harmonise with the local environment and culture of the Swedish community. SPACE&PLACE’s design carefully balanced a traditional vernacular style with the ultra-modern to achieve a distinctive, customer-friendly, up-beat shopping destination.
A dynamic glass pyramid feature marks the single entrance to the scheme. A familiar village-like design was adopted, with a series of streets and squares forming a single route. Each street and square has a distinctive character, creating a real sense of place.
The squares are covered with glazed pyramids, echoing the entrance feature, and are accompanied by a variety of sculptures.
Kungsbacka is one of a number of European Designer Outlet Villages we are working on with Freeport. The project cost £18m.
