Cardiff International White Water
March 2010
SPACE & PLACE acted as Project Architect and specialist sports consultant for Dean & Dyball, the Design and Build Contractor responsible for constructing the new £12 million Olympic standard Artificial White Water Course, at Cardiff’s International Sports Village on Cardiff Bay.
The project consisted of a new 250m concrete channel that formed the canoe course, which falls approximately 5 metres in height over the length, the water is pumped to the top of the course by a vertical lift pump station and the water is maintained within a retained water pond within Cardiff Bay.
The course is complemented by a facilities building that contains changing rooms, boat storage, café, retail store and regional offices for the Welsh Canoe Association. The project benefitted considerably from the wealth of experience and knowledge that S&P has developed as the British Canoe Union’s technical facilities consultant. The site is suitable for international standard competition, commercial rafting, canoe training, casual canoeing and training for emergency services.
