Birtley Leisure Centre

SPACE & PLACE, as part of the SCAPE team, was architect and interior designer for the refurbished Birtley Leisure Centre project as part of the Building and Active Future programme for Council.
Operating on one level, the centre was refurbished to create a more open feel to the internal space, with better access.
The main reception was positioned on the car park side of the building in the form of a glazed box, allowing natural daylight to create a welcoming entrance. This space connects to the viewing area for parents to oversee the childrens’ swimming area. A small internal ‘street’ connects all other spaces in the leisure centre and enables viewing into the pool hall immediately upon walking in to the building.
This project was successfully completed in May 2011 at a cost of £4million.
