Littlehampton Wave the new sports centre for the seaside town of Littlehampton is the largest capital project resulting from the 8 years Space & Place have been assisting Arun District Council reviewing district wide leisure, tourism and sports requirements in this rapidly growing part of the south of England.
The leisure centre is located in a beautiful position adjacent to the Edwardian Mewsbrook Park, on the sea front and includes an 8-lane 25m pool and 17m learner pool, 100 station gym, 2 studios, community room and generous café, with the latter also able to service the park and beach. Accommodation is spread over 2 storeys with views into and out of the pool from the park, whilst the south facing gym and café look out across the beach with particularly spectacular views from the gym on the first floor. The high quality contemporary design reflects the Council’s commitment to regeneration through design in addition to a reflection of the importance of the sea front location.
Space & Place developed the compact design to sit between extensive buried pipework and adjacent to the existing centre to enable continuity of service also the re-use of existing infrastructure such as access roads and car parks, examples of our commitment to maximise both the potential of a site and the client’s budget. The design is slightly elevated above the existing ground level to minimise the impact of the high water table during construction, but more importantly above potential flood levels should the sea wall ever be breached; this has the added bonus of improving views out to sea and increasing visibility along the sea front.
The Littlehampton Wave has been embraced by the local community with increased participation and attendance exceeding the original business plan, justifying the commitment of the Council and our team to deliver facilities for local people.
