The proposed redevelopment will provide a replacement for the existing Robinson Centre which is currently closed.
The vision for the facility is to provide a new aquatic centre with enhanced and modern facilities that meet both the requirements of the local and city wide strategic policies. Historically, the Robinson Centre has always been considered the primary swimming facility serving Belfast and the surrounding areas.
The new facility will provide a stage for aquatic galas, swimming training and other competitions within its 25m – 8 lane pool. This main pool will also benefit from moveable floors and be equipped with electronic equipment including score boards and timing pads. A first floor spectator gallery will accommodate 250 seats. The new facility will also ensure maximum flexibility by providing additional pool space to accommodate a combined learner/diving pool with moveable floor catering for all Learn to Swim levels and diving training (up to 3m only). A confidence water provision will also be included to accommodate early age access to water and support the wider agenda of the facility. The provision of generous changing rooms with flexible group rooms for school classes and club changing will complete the wet side provision.
The dry facilities include a 4 court sports hall, a 140 station fitness suite, 2 multi-purpose studios and a dedicated spin studio with separate dry changing rooms. A 50 covers café is also to be provided.
The existing community centre is to be demolished and replaced with new and improved facilities within the new building. The articulation between the community centre and the Leisure centre is to be defined at the next stage.
The outdoor facilities include two 5-a-side pitches, with designated team changing rooms within the main building, a skate park and the existing playground.
The facility will be designed to meet modern user expectations whilst minimising long term costs through highly efficient building envelope and services.
