SportScotland appointed SPACE & PLACE to lead a team to design a covered 3G synthetic pitch at their Inverclyde premises in Largs.
The facility has been designed to accommodate a flexible layout that adapts to a 66m by 44m seven-a-side pitch and three five-a-side pitches. The 3G surface has been specified to the highest standard of its kind, meeting FIFA 2 Star requirements.
The building is enclosed with a tensile fabric wrapped over a lightweight steel structure. This lightweight envelope provides many advantages; the semi translucent covering allows daylight to penetrate into the playing area, providing a natural quality of light and also removing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours, which reduces the carbon footprint of the building. The lightweight tubular truss structure provides a clear height of over 11m.
The facility is supported by 30 car parking spaces, WCs, shower and changing benches.
The building has been designed to allow full access for all users. To facilitate access, the disabled parking bays have been located close to the front entrance. Level access, with no steps or obstructions, has been provided throughout the building to allow for full wheelchair access. The shower and WC facilities have been designed to accommodate disabled and ambulant users.
This project was successfully completed in June 2014. The cost is confidential.
