Freeport Excalibur Znojmo Czech Republic

August 2003

Freeport Excalibur is situated on the Czech-Austria border North of Vienna. SPACE & PLACE’s project brief was for design and build for this fully enclosed environment of 22,500m2 high quality retail space.

The retail centre is accessed via curving malls, forming a single route via a contemporary, grand and striking entrance. The entrance has curved canopies and a 34m branded square tower which acts as a beacon within the border area.

The centre is provided with a thousand car parking spaces and is fully landscaped. The stone and timber shop fronts vary greatly in their design and character creating a distinctive and unique internal streetscape. Freeport’s philosophy is that architecture and interior design are vital factors in the creation of a friendly and relaxed environment that will attract customers.

The timber rafted ceiling is punctuated with natural daylight from roof lights along the mall and into the squares. These squares are focal points on the journey around the mall with coffee shops, fountains, sculptured steel palm trees and stained and coloured glass structures nurturing local skills and crafts.

This project was successfully completed at a cost of £12million.
