Gunnersbury Park Sports Centre

November 2020

SPACE&PLACE (S&P) transformed Gunnersbury Park with an innovative sports pavilion. Nestled within a 75-hectare Metropolitan Open Land in London, this Grade II* listed park straddles both Ealing and Hounslow Councils. Despite its historical charm, the park faced decline, with several buildings listed as “At Risk.”

The vision for revitalisation was clear: turn Gunnersbury Park into a dynamic destination. S&P led the project through all RIBA stages, integrating numerous exciting features. The process began with a comprehensive Needs Assessment and Business Planning report, crafted with the help of a Sport and Leisure consultant. Stakeholder views significantly shaped the planning, design, and operational aspects, ensuring both viability and sustainability.

Consultations included Historic England, Sport England, and National Governing Bodies (NGBs). Two sport-specific public consultations were conducted, along with broader consultations aligning with the park’s Master Plan. Our architects focused on meeting community needs and incorporating valuable features.

Key users include the University of West London, local sports clubs, schools, Middlesex Cricket, and Brentford FC Community Sports Trust (BFCCST). This facility is set to significantly boost activity levels, particularly among students traditionally less engaged in sports. Brentford FC’s partnership with Ealing and Hounslow Councils continues, aiming to promote activity for all ages.

The LTA, England and Wales Cricket Board, and Middlesex Cricket identified the park’s facilities as crucial. They addressed the need for additional tennis and cricket pitches in the area. Featherstone and Willow Tree Schools, along with Sports Impact School Sports Partnership, will also benefit from the site.

As architect, lead designer, and principal designer, S&P ensured high-quality outcomes. The project involved extensive pre-planning consultations with stakeholders, including English Heritage and local clubs, to align with community needs and minimise disruptions.
