The Halls Wolverhampton

January 2023

In 2019, the ambitious remodelling of Wolverhampton’s iconic Civic Halls was taken over by SPACE&PLACE (S&P) and Atkins Réalis after the Shayler Group’s insolvency. Despite partially completed strip-outs and remaining asbestos, the project was restarted from RIBA 0 by S&P. The original design was discarded, and a fresh approach was taken.

Heritage & Significance:

Originally built in 1938, the Civic Halls have hosted a wide range of events, from performances by David Bowie and Oasis to wrestling and comedy shows. The renovation preserved this rich history while enhancing the building’s appeal. As a result, the Civic Halls continue to serve as a cultural cornerstone for Wolverhampton. Comprising the main Civic Hall and the smaller Wulfrun Hall, accessibility, capacity, and functionality have been significantly improved.

Project Vision:

The goal of the City of Wolverhampton Council was to elevate the Civic Halls to modern standards. Therefore, accessibility and capacity were enhanced to attract a broader range of events. Renovations included new upper balcony seating, additional bars, and catering facilities, generating new revenue streams and ensuring economic sustainability. These upgrades support a variety of events, from West End theatre productions to music festivals, boosting Wolverhampton’s night-time economy.

Design & Innovation:

Flexibility, adaptability, and preservation of the building’s historic character were key design focuses. New wheelchair-accessible entrances, VIP areas, and modern backstage facilities were added. Additionally, a 150-ton steel frame was used to support new upper-level seating and bar areas. As a result, the Civic Halls now meet modern requirements while retaining their iconic status.
