Nova Centre, Prestatyn

Jun 2015

Denbighshire County Council appointed SPACE & PLACE to design a refurbishment of the existing Nova Leisure Centre in Prestatyn when it had been closed for public use for some time.

The former lido with its Starlight Suite, where the Beatles had played in 1964, was in need  of complete overhaul, and the facilities required re-working to make the centre a modern vibrant attraction that would appeal to both visitors from afar and also provide a state of the art facility for its local residents.

The design work by S&P included:

  • The refurbishment of the 25m 4 lane pool, supplemented by new open plan pool surround changing facilities
  • Converting the former restaurants and bars to a 60 station gym
  • Transforming the old Starlight Suite into 2 dance studios that can also be used as a function suite with a dedicated bar facility
  • Accessing the centre via a new entrance foyer, with reception and admin offices, giving access to the pool, fitness suite and studios and a large modern 3 storey (300sqm) soft play area
  • Interlinking the facilities with a new café area, with upgraded kitchens to serve both the children’s café and the Sea View restaurant, with large picture windows giving views across the Irish Sea.

The whole building has transformed into a modern leisure facility for the local residents with a fun loving colourful beach hut elevation looking out over the golden sands of Rhyl.

The whole project took less than 18 months from appointment of S&P to completion.
