SPACE & PLACE has been working with Arun District Council for a number of years, reviewing their leisure needs and stock and culminating in the decision to replace the existing sports centre in Littlehampton.
The proposals are located in a beautiful position adjacent to the Edwardian Mewsbrook Park, looking out to sea. They will consist of an 8-lane 25m pool and 17m learner pool, 100 station gym, 2 studios, community room and generous café, with the latter also able to service the park and beach. Accommodation is spread over 2 storeys with views into and out of the pool from the park, whilst the south facing gym and café look out across the beach with particularly spectacular views from the gym on the first floor. The high quality contemporary design reflects the Council’s commitment to regeneration through design in addition to a reflection of the importance of the sea front location.
The replacement centre is located close to the existing centre to enable continuity of service provision and re-use of the existing car park, examples of S&P’s commitment to maximise both the potential of a site and the client’s budget. The design is slightly elevated above the existing ground level to minimise the impact of the high water table during construction, but more importantly above potential flood levels should the sea wall ever be breached. This approach has the added bonus of improving views out to sea and increasing visibility along the sea front. The building layout and siting is developed to allow the simple addition of a dryside sports hall to the north, to a different programme, with minimal impact on operation and function of the main centre.
